Hip Hip Hippo

Jonny was lucky enough to play golf at the famous Formby Golf Club links last week.

The course is famous for hosting a number of very good events including the British Amateur and the Arnold Palmer Cup to name but two.

It was a windy and wet day not ideal for golf, but often is the case at a links course. Play was suspended for around 20 minutes during a downpour. I’d like to say I played well, but sadly it was a below average game for me!

One of the features of Formby is the ‘hippo’ when one of the members bequeathed a hippo to the club. The hippos was strapped to a warship and upon return from service has been on the wall at Formby ever since. Each year members play for the Hippo Trophy!

The DaVinci Code

Most of us are familiar with the genius of Leonardo DaVinci - his 15th century ideas for submarines, flying machines and the like are legendary.

However, I have not seen any lifesize realisations of his ideas.

Until now.

This amazing helicopter concept was devised in the 15th century and has many similarities with modern day 'coptors. The advent of the aerofoil wing being perhaps the only key difference.

Those of us who like design cannot help but be impressed with these sketches and to see one made into a life size model is impressive. Have you seen any DaVinci inspired designs recently, why not let us know and we can share the ideas.

The Wicker (Wo)Man

Who would believe that anyone could make such a fantastic wicker rocket?

Well, not us, that's for sure, becuase we know all about the creative talents that Jo Henderson possesses!

This amazing rocket has been made for the Borrowash in Bloom community event. The rocket is over 8 feet tall and incorporates real lights powered by solar energy! It helps to commemorate the Moon landings in 1969, a full 50 years ago this September.

But Jo isnt' just a dab hand with wicker, she's also an expert in metal too - having built the legendary Sims metal robot on Mansfield road - Anyone who knows Derby will know this classic landmark, which she built in 1988...and its still standing!

If you need anything slightlly 'off the wall' then you know where to come - We can help turn even the most mundane into something creative!! Just give us a call on 01332 291141 to find out more.

Sitting down on the job

I am lucky enough to be able to ski quite a lot each season. It is something that customers have become accustomed to and the studio Team have become supremely talented at managing projects during this time. I manage to still oversee most of the essential creative work thanks to the wonders of the interweb...!

Anyway, in March
I helped to test a new sitski. This is a device that allows people with spinal or other issues that affect their lower body to experience skiing. You may have seen athletes on the Winter Olympics using a sit ski - exciting stuff indeed!

This particular model is a bi-ski, meaning it has two skis (single ski versions are also available). In the first instance a user will be 'tethered' by an instructor. (you can see the reigns in the photo) This ensures that a beginner can control speed and descent. In my case this was very neccessary!

Sara Jones, an elite adaptive instructor of Alpine Freedom and the SkiCheck academy was kind enough to be the tether on this occasion, giving me guidance on how to use the outriggers (arm extensions with mini skis on the ends - these can be used in 'walk' or 'ski' mode by releasing a cord). The outriggers allow the skier to change direction and aid in balance too.

In the video you can see how I am using my body along with the outriggers to make changes in direction.

The Power of Pink

When we freshened up our logo we decided on shocking pink for the new colour. In order to ensure that this colour becomes well and truly established we are in the process of redecorating our reception areas. The work is paintwork is being done by our favorite 'resident' decorator Reg Wilson.

Once the paintwork is completed we will fitting new carpets and some interesting robot images should complete the look. We anticipate that the work will be completed by the end of January 2019,  scary to think that 2019 will be our 32nd year of business and our 28th year at Trinity House on Green Lane...

If you have visited the studio you will know the colours and the new look may give you quite a suprise...but if you haven't visited us, then why not come along, we'd be delighted to show you around.

Just give us a call on 01332 291141 and we'll look forward to seeing you very soon!

When design was a real skill...

If anyone can remember, before the advent of the Apple Mac, all artwork was done by hand, using technical drawing skills to create logos, artwork and drawings etc. In principle, you had to be able to at least draw and have a some creative/artistic skill to even think about entering the design field. It was a real craft.

One of the tools we used to use was the technical pen. Several brands were available with the market leaders being Rotring and Staedtler.

I tended to favour the Staedtler brand mainly down to the fact that the 0.5 nib seemed to block less oftenthan the Rotring version of the same. While rooting through one of our cupboard here at the studio I found this brand new virtually unused set of pens in the original box!

This brought back memories of having to physically draw keylines for artwork using CS10 board, red film, and of course set squares and technical pens...

With computer aided design and so many application to help with design, it's easy to see how the craft element has been lost over the years...however, here are PE Creative we still believe that crafting a design is one of the key differentiators that we bring to your design.

Anyone can style something up, but not anyone can develop a concept in quite the same way we do.

If you'd like to see how we can help you to diffentiate your brand, give us a call on 01332 291141 and we can discuss your specific needs.

The Real Ryder Cup

I was lucky enough to win free tickets to the British Masters golf hosted by Justin Rose at Walton Heath Golf Club last weekend.

Andy and I enjoyed a windy and wet but fun filled day at Walton Heath where we both got to see and hold the Ryder Cup.  Europe's Captain Thomas Bjorn was at the event and kindly brought along the cup for spectators to see.

The eventual winner was Eddy Pepperell who shot a superb score to win by one shot ahead of Sweden's Bjork.

We were also able to enter in to the MOLIWOOD spirit (for those of you who are not golfers, this is a reference to the Ryder Cup winning partnership of Italy's Francesco MOLInari and England's own Tommy FleetWOOD. Whom the press aptly dubbed MOLIWOOD)!

I rather like this creative wordplay and I think it would be good for clients to think of type as a way to improve their own communications...If you'd like to hear more about how we use type to great effect, give us a call on 01332 291141.

The Nick Slade Wider Cup 2018

Next week eight interpid golfers embark on the second Wider Cup to be held in Marbella, Spain. This event was renamed the Nick Slade Wider Cup in memory of Nick who sadly untimely passed away earlier this year.

Nick was a giant of a man who lived life to the full. A larger than life character with a left handed golf swing who made friends with eveyone he met. He will be missed and I am sure that more than a few toasts will be made in his name next week.

The Nick Slade Wider Cup deserved a branding befitting of his charisma, so I designed this logo (based on his lefty swing and customary reveresed baseball hat). The logo has been produced on  all sorts of apparel from shirts and hats to pin badges as well as score sheets and rules etc.

The picture shows Jonny and Nick last year at Santa Clara Golf Club.

If you have an event you'd like to brand, then why not give the team a call on 01332 291141 and we will be delighted to discuss your requirements

Kitzbuhel Krazy

Last weekend I was in Kitzbuhel for the FIS Audi Men's Downhill event. This is the skiing equivilant of the Masters Golf tournement.  The race is held on the infamous Strief course and is known locally as the Hahnenkamm-Rennen. Hahnenkamm literally translates as roosters comb primarily due to its multiple curves and shapes across the mountain terrain.

Many have tried but not many have won. The legendary Franz 'The Kaiser' Klammer is perhaps the most famous winner with four titles to his name. In recent years Didier "the Butcher" Cuche made it to three. With other winners inclusing Alberto "Tomba the Bomba' Tomba and Hermann 'The Herminator' Mayer.

This year we were all expecting a win by favorites Axle Lund Svindall, Beat Fuez or Dominic Paris. Usually the race is won by anyone wearing bibs 1 to 12...however a suprise winner was bib number 19, Germany's Thomas Dressen. You can see his amazing run on Youtube here:

Tigers!!!!

Jonny was pleased to join some good friends at the Leicester Tigers v Saracens game on Christmas Eve.

We enjoyed a superb meal and great company, not mention a great match. The Saras' beat the Tigers pretty convincingly in the end...but being rugby, there was no hard feelings. Just know that next time we will thrash you!

Pictured is the table guests...

A 360 Degree View of Skiing

Dave and Denise Leatt from 360 Media in Derby are both friends of mine and we often play golf together.

However, Denise wanted to try something different and having decided to try skiing again, she managed to convince Dave to take up the sport. I offered to help them to feel the planks under their feet and gave them both a lesson at the Snowdome.

Denise had skied before and it didn't take her long to find her feet whilst Dave started like all beginners, with slight apprehension (like me he has a bad knee), however after around 1.5 hours he really got it...

They plan to visit Zell am See in Austria in January 2018 and I hope to join them out there for a day. I am sure a week on real snow in resort will do thiwer skiing wonders.

Let's hope it works out!

STOP PRESS!!

We did meet up in Zell am See - The photo below is the photographic proof!

Back in the Swing...

Jonny was proud to have won the 2017 Kedleston Park Autumn Cup. This is a 36 hole competition played over consecutive weekends. In the first round he was able to shoot 8 over par. This meant that the pressure was on to play well in the second round...

Round two got off to a good start and after 10 holes he was only 4 over par...on course for another good score...however the dreaded par three 11th took its dues...where he carded a ridiculous four over par six. Underterred he went on to shot a level par score, which luckiluy was just enough to remain four under net.

The picture shows Captian (ex Scottish International and Nottingham Forest player Kenny Burns and the Lady Captain presenting the prize crystalware...

If you fancy a game of golf then why not give us acall on 01332 291141 and discuss business whilest enjoyng a round!

Keep Calm and Clear your Cache - when web designers are trying to be helpful!

"Clear your browser cache" (CYBC) is the first response that tech people (I include ourselves in that description, even though we are primarily designers) will give when you encounter a web page problem. We'll look at why that is and how to clear the browser cache.

The browser cache appears in more answers than questions, but it often causes even more questions. Even when following instructions to empty the cache, many people aren’t clear on what this piece of magic really is, or why clearing the cache does anything at all.

Let’s review the browser cache, what it is and why it exists. Along the way, we’ll review the steps to clear it in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome and try to dream up some reasons why that sometimes helps.

The browser cache

The cache exists because of a basic assumption made by browser designers: the internet is slow. More accurately, your internet connection is slower than your computer.

What that means is that it’s faster to get something from your hard disk than it is to get it from the internet. Even with today’s faster internet speeds, that still holds very true.

Browser designers noticed that most web sites had many of the same elements on multiple pages. For example, if you look at most pages, you’ll see a logo at the top. So the thinking was, why download the same logo for every page? Why not just download it once and then keep it so we can use it again?

That’s what the browser cache is for. The cache is nothing more than a place on your hard disk where the browser keeps things that it downloaded once in case they’re needed again.

When you first visit a page on a site, the browser downloads the logo into the cache, and then displays it on the page you’re viewing. For each additional page you visit, the logo doesn’t need to be downloaded again; as long as the same logo is displayed, it’s already on your hard disk.

The cache has a size limit, which you can usually configure. When the cache gets full, the items in it that haven’t been used in a while are discarded to make more space.

Naturally, there’s a little more to it than that. For example, there are ways to update the logo on a site and have that override whatever is in your cache, so what you see is always up-to-date. But by and large, that’s all it is: a place to keep things locally so you don’t have to download the same things over and over again.

And it’s all transparent to you. Until something breaks, or more usually if you are having a site built and developed, when you are continually reviewing the pages. This is when CYBC becomes imperative, otherwise you'll never see what is really 'live' on the site until you do so.

Clearing the cache
Clearing the cache just means emptying it, so that the next time you display a web page everything must be downloaded anew.

For reasons I simply can’t explain – other than by saying “stuff happens” – the cache sometimes get confused. This seems to happen to most all browsers and at random times. What you’ll see are partially loaded or badly formatted web pages, incomplete pictures, or, in some cases, the wrong picture in the wrong place.

It’s not always a caching problem, but because it happens often enough, “clear your browser cache” is often one of the first diagnostic steps you’ll hear from people like us.

Here’s how

Simply visit www.refreshyourcache.com by clicking here and select your browser type.

I kid you not, you will get fed up to the back teeth of hearing us ask you to CYBC, especially if your site is being updated or renewed by us, however it really is the only way for you to see what are actually the live pages.

Some questions often asked:

If I have to clear my cache,  then won't my customers also have to do the same?
Most likely no. You are constantly vieiwing your demo site while the site build is in process. Your customer most likely visits your site periodically. When they visit your new site they will have never seen it before and as such ALL the pages they view will be new and will be 'forced' by their browser to download.

Does emptying my cache cause any problems?
No, it simply 'forces' your browser to reload all pages (even bookmarked ones) to reload from scratch.

Will I lose my data stored in my browser?
The only data that disappears is cookies and page data. If you are responsible then you should never really store private data in your browser cache, (I'm talking bank/SM passwords etc) what happens if your tablet or laptop gets stolen? In any case, you can choose to empty your cache and retain this data if you wish, just use the preferences when clearing the cache.

Isn't refreshing my page page clearing my cache?
No. If you click on the refresh/reload button  on your web browser, this will trigger a “soft refresh” on the web browser where it will check against the web server to see if the files are modified. If modified, the web browser will pull the latest version of the file and if not modified, the web browser will continue to use the cache version. In many cases the file name is the same so the cached file will be the one you see, and not the modified updated one with the same name.

In Conclusion

I hope that you find this information useful and trust that it helps to demystify some of the issues and questions you may have. If you'd like a more detailed discussion then please feel free to call us on 01332 291141 and we'll be happy to help and advise.

Birkdale Adventures

I was lucky enough to visit the Open this month - golf's most revered major championship. The Open was won this year by 23 year old Jordan Spieth who had an amazing Sunday back nine...closing with birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, par. Quite simply put - amazing!

Spending time on the links watching the worlds greatest golfers is inspiring. So much so that I also ended up playing three lovely local
courses.

Southport and Ainsdale is best known for hosting back to back Ryder Cups in the 1930s. This course was in superb condition and I was lucky enough to finish with the same ball I started with, shooting a lovely gross 14 over.

West Derby is a Liverpool gem - hidden away unexpectedly within a housing area, you could blink and miss it. However, this tight little course played pretty tough and has a cheeky little stream running through the course which is like a ball magnet...!

Hesketh is the oldest course in the area and offers a superb challenge. With two closing par fives it lets you repair a lot of damage, or so I thought. Parring the 17th I went on to play a lovely drive up the left hand side of 18, followed by a sublime 5 iron  to leave exactly 70 yards to the flag. Routine par five...on no siree. I flailed at a 58 degree wedge only to pull my shot onto deep rough. It took me a further 5 shots to eventually hole out for a grim 7...not quite how I visualised the closing hole!
Still 12 over wasn't too bad for the day.

Great customers deserve great things...

We recently heard the news that PE Creative client's Scoffield Stone / Our House estate and lettings agents have been awarded as one of the UKs top 20% agencies. They may even have won - but we won't know that until November!

Paul Morris from Scoffield Stone commented "we are chuffed" he went on "we are delighted to be nominated in this category, as a team we have all worked very hard to ensure that customers receive the best service."

From our perspective, its good to know that businesses we work with are successful and are recognised in this way. We are very happy for Paul and the team and wish them all the best - here's to a successful night in November...!

Mags and Jonny - 22 years later...

One of my oldest friends in business is Mags Shaw who runs Mags Worldwide. See her old site here

I have known her since 1990 and anyone who meets her will never forget her. She has an amazing personality and her enthusiasm and love for life is infectious. Trouble is she'd never let you tell her that because when Mags starts chatting, its almost impossible to get a word in edgeways! Its all part of the charm she has...

The photo of us in evening dress was taken at the Sphinx "Trail to New Orleans" Launch event which was held in a marquee at Breadsall Priory in Derbyshire in 1995.

The photo of us in civvies was taken 22 years later in 2017 at Shaw's House in Guisley, Leeds.

Mags still looks the same whereas look at the old bald geezer on the right...

Save the Tiger

As an avid golf fan I was saddened by the demise of one of the games true greats, a child phenomenon and genius. A winner of 14 majors, and 73 PGA wins. A player who won 25% of the events he entered. Nobody else in the modern era has even come close.

Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer of all time, if stats alone were to weigh. However he has (only!) won 14 majors against Jack's 18. So the history books will only ever have him in second place in this respect.

From a glittering start to his professional career "Hello World" to his loss of form and breakdown of marriage and health, Woods has always been in the news. Be that good or bad, his presence on a golf course or at an event creates a buzz.

I have seen him play the Open several times (at the Belfry Ryder Cup, St Andrew's when he won, at Open, Lytham when he lost to David Duval and at the Open Hoylake when he won a few months after his father's death. He stood tall and confident, almost ethereal. At the pinnacle of his game.

Yesterday the news of his arrest for DUI and subsequent press photos is just so sad. It almost underlines his current life status. Jack Nicklaus made the comment that "we need to help Tiger" and I completely agree.

Tiger brought so much to the game - distance, power, accuracy, charisma, deft touch, not to mention some of the greatest shots we will ever see. Those of us who saw him in his prime will never forget the sound of his ball striking, nor the elegance and poise. How should the game repay him?

I think that 'someone' should take control of the situation - I have no idea how this could happen or who could do this. But clearly he needs support.

The golfing community needs to do this.

Save the Tiger

How do you get people to stop at your exhibition stand...?

Show them the money...!

There are some questions that are perpetually asked of designers and marketing professionals:

"please tell me who has looked at my website"
"why do I need to spend so much money on design"
"how do I generate more sales"
"how do I get people to look at my product"

The list goes on...

Eckoh came up with a quirky way to get people to stop on their stand - MONEY!

"Excuse me, have you dropped some money?"

Its a great opening line and one that invariably gets a conversation going...we produced some mock dollar bills and stirling notes to help create this opportunity. Simple graphics combined with some pure messaging allows the Eckoh event team to open dialogue.

Not only that but the concept was tweeted by industry press - almost to the viral stage...which can't be bad!

A proven way to get to people - give them cold hard cash!
